Why meditate?

There are so many benefits waiting to be received from a steady meditation practice, spanning from emotional to physical to spiritual.

Regular meditation changes our brain structure, activating the part of the brain which is associated with our higher functions like compassion, intuition, creativity, and capacity for joy.  It also neutralizes the more primitive parts of our brain that we use in "survival mode," such as fear, anxiety, and stress.

There have been many scientific studies that prove the physical benefits of meditation, including pain management, certain psychological disorders, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammation, and much more.  The American Heart Association says that meditation "is widely accessible and inexpensive and may thus be a potential attractive cost‐effective adjunct to more traditional medical therapies."

Meditation is used in many cultures, religions, and spiritual practices as a way to connect with something bigger and beyond oneself.  This can be thought of as God, Spirit, the universe, Divine Mother, or other deities, saints and sages more closely tied to a specific tradition, such as Jesus or Krishna.  It can also be thought of as connecting to our own infinite self, or our highest potential.  By stilling our body and thoughts, we allow ourselves to receive what we can't catch when we are too busy to notice.
